Sarawak Cultural Village (3)

Rumah Penan was not really a large sprawling house like the other houses of the people of Sarawak. It was just a small hut built on the ground. According to the staff who manned the hut, the Penans built huts because they were temporary dwellers. they were nomadic and would usually move on to other parts of the area. Yet, they were the best hunters and head-hunters among the other races of Sarawak. They were so silent that if they were to stand still in a jungle even the monkeys would not realise they were there. Some of us tried the blowpipe and I suppose it took great skill to be a great hunter. I was also fascinated with the blade used for head-hunting. The sword maker explained with much detail and pride on some of the types of the weapons on display at the sword making shed. I do not advocate violence but I guess times are different then. We had fun at the top-spinning shed and some tried their hands at picking up the top which of course, was not possible with just a five-minute lesson! There was a hut that sold souvenirs like T-shirts and it offered tattoo drawing too. There was also a hut that made food products from sago.
